Our work focuses on developing quantum computers, diamond quantum repeaters, diamond quantum internet, and diamond quantum storage.

Through the fusion of light and quantum technology, our students and researchers are working together to open up new possibilities for future society.
You can explore our latest research outcomes and activities in the following sections: News, Publications, and Research.

Our Research

Diamond is known as the hardest gemstone, but when doped with impurities and heat-treated, it transforms into the most robust quantum memory, capable of preserving quantum states for seconds. For example, when nitrogen is introduced, it forms a nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center, a type of color center. Surrounding these centers are numerous carbon isotopes with spin, which serve as quantum memories lasting for minutes.

By using such ensembles of quantum memories within diamonds, we can realize phenomena known as quantum teleportation, something that once seemed like science fiction.
Building on this principle, our team has successfully demonstrated quantum repeaters, the core component of a future quantum internet, and continues advancing research toward that ambitious goal.

Message from Professor Hideo Kosaka

At our lab, we are working toward realizing quantum computers and quantum networks by developing quantum interfaces and quantum repeaters.
These goals are defined by projects and carried out through the Quantum Information Research Center (QIC) at Yokohama National University, where I serve as director.
